About our Name…

About Us...
The word “Shaolin” refers to a school, not a style or
technique as it is so often mistaken. Roughly translated it means “young
woods”. “Wushu” simply means martial art and “Kung Fu” is loosely
translated as hard work. The Academy name, therefore, means “Hard work
in the martial arts school”.
Our Mission statement…
“The Academy will always be operated with quality
instruction,
respect, commitment and strong values.”
About the Sigong…
Sigong Perez began studying
Kung Fu when he was 8 years old. When he first came to El Paso, many
years ago, there were no kung fu schools…the city was dominated by
karate dojos and tae kwon do.
He has a black belt in Shotokan Karate and was a member of the legendary
El Paso Karate Team which went undefeated for four consecutive years.
Sigong Perez is an active Member of the
American Wushu Kung Fu Federation. He is also a board member of the
Southwest Karate Alliance, of which he was the first President
(2001-2002). He has also been certified by the National Association of
Professional Martial Arts as a kickboxing instructor since 1997.
Mr. Perez was inducted to the hall of fame in Irving, TX,
July 3, 2004.
Sigong Perez has been recognized by the
Ysleta school district for his outstanding commitment to education and
support for local events and programs such as "Say NO to Drugs" and
"Kicking for Toys".
The Shaolin Wushu Kung Fu Academy officially opened in 1989 with just a
handful of students. The Academy has been officially recognized as one
of the top 100 martial arts schools in America by Martial Arts Magazine.
The school publishes a monthly newsletter and sponsors two of the
largest double "AA" rated martial arts tournaments every year. Sigong
Perez takes his students to China annually to places like the Shaolin
Temple or the Beijing Wushu Institute to train and experience China's
unique culture.
The Academy is also proud to house Team El Paso Wushu, El Paso's first
and ONLY Kung Fu demonstration and competition team. The team was formed
in 2002 from a select group of the most dedicated kung fu disciples.
With over 22 years of teaching Kung Fu, Sigong Perez still strives to
increase the level of knowledge, commitment and skill in his students
for generations to come.
